Friends of the Fraser Wetlands

VOICES for the Trent-Severn Waterway (TSW) held an important meeting Sunday June 28, 2015 in the Buckhorn Community Centre. More than 200 came out to hear speakers TSW Working Group Chair Mark Ackert, TSW Director Ontario Waterways Jewell Cunningham and former Chair Peterborough Canoe Museum Ken Powell (Stony Laker).

Ably chaired by VOICES Chair Brain Hunt, local municipal politicians were introduced but not showcased. This meeting belonged to the citizens who are concerned about TSW water quality and quantity, climate change, the environment and the uncertain sustainable future for the TSW.

Under federal jurisdiction, the TSW issues have landed squarely in the lap of the federal candidates standing for election to Ottawa this year. They were there in droves! Federal party candidates from Simcoe North, HKLB, Peterborough-Kawartha and Bay of Quinte.

An eye-opener for all, this waterway is the centre of The Land Between and Burleigh Falls – and Fraser Estate is the midpoint of both! VOICES is making this a federal election issue.

Concerns need to translate into policy and policy is enacted and implemented by politicians. Kudos to VOICES!
